TWB? Get a "Fix"

Rent-A-Bike? Never! A bike is just too personal, too "me" for me to want to just rent one.

That is what I used to think. Of course, at the time I had a bike and didn't need to consider the option of ever having to rent.

Recently, I found myself TWB (temporarily without bike) and had an invitation to make a road trip with a friend. It was really tempting, girls, a cool destination, girls, going to a fun biker event, girls, lots of bands and music, girls and a chance to ride some Backroads with BikerTrash.

Suddenly, a rental bike sounded a whole lot better. Now, how much trouble is it going to be and am I going to get some POS that breaks down a lot or looks like it has been "rode hard and put up wet?"

Well, here goes. A quick call to Kelley, manager of Rentals at Easyrider assured me that this was going to be a whole lot less painful than a root canal. Kelley reserved a Harley Road King and told me I could pick it up Friday afternoon.

Better to allow myself some extra time since I figured that the paperwork, insurance and all of that stuff would take the better part of the afternoon so I went over a little early.

But, this was Kelley and Easyriders Houston I was dealing with.

"Sign here, initial here, read this, here are your keys. Thank you. Have fun and a safe trip."

Wow! That was fast.

Kelley led me over to a georgeous 2002 Road King. Immaculate condition, clean as a whistle and only a few thousand miles on it - hardly even broken in good.

Okay, maybe this rental stuff does have its advantages.

The bike performed flawlessly throughout the weekend as we travelled almost 600 miles of Texas' backroads.

Whether stuck in traffic, making good time on the open road or riding in a torrential rain the Road King was a joy to ride, and the rental process was easy to accomplish.

And yes, it was a whole lot more fun than a root canal.

The cost? Depends on whether you want it on the weekend or during midweek. (Midweek is a lot cheaper)

But, it you are TWB and need a "fix" the total cost of renting a bike for the weekend is a real bargain - and when you park it back at their place you aren't facing a monthly bike payment or a monthly insurance payment.

Come to think of it, the total cost is less than the equivalent of 2 week's worth of payment and insurance on my last bike.

Next time I am TWB and want to make a trip I won't hesitate to call up Kelley and rent one of Easyriders' rental bikes. Maybe next time, I will rent a Big Dog. Cool.
