Billy Gordon & the Blue Rockers
Live at Perq’s

(C)2000 by Miss BB
Huntington Beach, California is expensive cars and
new buildings with lots of steel and glass - a thoroughly modern
metropolis. But it is also a link with the old California,
the California that the old "Westerns" portrayed - gold rushes,
the old west, cattle ranchers, oil barons, railroad developers,
hustlers, con men and saloons. Those movies were from a
more innocent time, it never occurred to us to wonder why "Miss
Kitty" at the Long Branch Saloon had all of those pretty girls
there. We were supposed to believe that in a town of 300
rough cowboys there would naturally be 3 or 4 dozen extraordinarily
georgeous women - all working at the local saloon.
Perq's Nightclub (on Main Street just off the Pacific
Coast Highway) is a link to the past - okay maybe they don't still
hire 30 georgeous saloon girls with their own rooms upstairs -
but the biker chicks and the beach bunnies that come in here are
nothing to scoff at.
Perqs, built in the early 1900's, is still in its
original form. Today this homey little bar serves as a tribute
to the past and as a landmark reflecting what Huntington Beach
use be be in years gone by.
In the beginning riders tied up their horses to
the hitching posts out front under a sign that read
“Gospel Swamp”. Now riders park their Harley’s out front
under a sign, which now reads, “Perq’s”. This one time local
brothel now entertains with such artists as; Walter Troutt, Robby
Armstrong, B.B. Chung, King & The Buddaheads and K.K. Martin.
The December night that we were there we were treated to the music
of Billy Gordon &
The Blue Rockers.
Billy Gordon & The Blue Rockers have been entertaining
bikers all across the United States and internationally for years.
They have performed at the Sturgis Rally for the last eleven years,
Keystone's Ruby House, The Rat’s Hole annual Custom Chopper Show
and performed live for thousands of bikers at Buffalo Chips campground.
From the Netherlands to New Zealand, from London to L.A. this
band has given bikers some memorable perormances.
It was easy to get caught up in the heat of the
music - flipping my hips to and fro, bumping and grinding
and all the while with Billy Gordon working the magic. The
band sizzled on stage, they never seemed to tire as they
rocked on endlessly. When Billy plays his Saxophone you see some
real "Sax appeal."
“Bad To The Bone” hit the room like lightening
as Billy's magical fingers provided the thundering followup.
It is easy to see why Billy Gordon and the Blue Rockers have a
reputation for taking an audience by storm.
The final performance of the night was a blast of
acoustic delight as he combined three different National anthems
in a performance that brought the crowd to its feet. Billy
cranked out this musical montage on a custom guitar designed with
the flags of New Zealand, England and United States of America.
(Editor's footnote): Billy Gordon toured Gisborne,
New Zealand, performing live for the Gisborne Combined Motorcycle
Group for New Years Eve 2000 and then flew back over the date
line to celebrate the New Year with a performance in Hawaii.
